GEAR LIST

These are the gear lists for the 2020 race. We anticipate the 2021 gear list to be similar.

beginners' race:

Full Time Mandatory Team Gear [1 per team must be carried at all times]
  • Working cell phone (to be kept OFF and used only for emergencies)
  • Compass
  • Means to carry enough water and food for the entire 1-3 hour race
  • Enough clothing to keep you warm, even if it's raining
  • Writing utensil(s) [Sharpie marker with thin tip recommended]

Full Time Mandatory Individual Gear [Each team member must have the following at all times]
  • Face mask (must fully cover nose and mouth and be easily accessible to racers at all times)

There is no mandatory paddle gear. Race management will provide kayaks, PFDs, and paddles. You may use your own PFDs and paddles if desired.

Recommended Gear
  • Long pants, tights or leg protection
  • Sunglasses or hat with visor
  • Bug spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Waterproof map case or others means of waterproofing maps (a Ziploc bag works great!)
  • Waterproof case for phone (double Ziplocs!)

Prohibited Equipment
  • GPS
  • Firearms
  • Communication devices (other than cell phone to be kept OFF except for emergencies)
  • Motorized means of transport

8-hour race

Full Time Mandatory Team Gear [1 per team must be carried at all times]
  • Writing utensil(s) [Sharpie marker with thin tip recommended]
  • Working cell phone (to be kept OFF and used only for emergencies)
  • First aid kit
  • Compass
  • Water purification method for entire team

Full Time Mandatory Individual Gear [Each team member must have the following at all times]
  • Face mask (must fully cover nose and mouth and be easily accessible to racers at all times)
  • Whistle
  • Space blanket
  • Means to carry at least 50 oz. of liquid
  • Food for the entire race
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Means to carry mandatory gear (e.g., backpack)
  • Headlight 

Mandatory Individual Biking Gear [Each team member must have the following on all biking sections.]
  • Mountain bike recommended. You will need a bike capable of riding rough dirt roads in order to obtain all checkpoints. Any bike is acceptable if you plan to obtain the mandatory points only.
  • Bike helmet
  • Red flashing rear light

There is no mandatory paddle gear. Race management will provide kayaks, PFDs, and paddles. You may use your own PFDs and paddles if desired.
