2019 8-hour intermediate race update
Race Day Schedule: On Sunday, October 13, the bike drop will open at 6:30 a.m., racer registration at 7:00 a.m., pre-race meeting at 7:30 a.m., and race start at 8:00 a.m. ***See below for information about the bike drop.*** We highly recommend arriving as early as you can to the bike drop and registration because maps will be handed out as you register, so arriving early means you will have more time to plan your route. Maps will be distributed to the team when all team members have checked in.
Race Headquarters and Parking: Registration is located in the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery building at 306 Hatchery Rd in East Orland, ME. Parking is available in the spots right in front of the building. Water and bathrooms are available in the registration/start area. Plan to start with enough water for the entire race. Breakfast will not be provided.
Bike Drop Location: All racers will need to leave their mountain bikes at a remote location prior to checking in at registration. As noted above, the bike drop opens at 6:30 a.m. We recommend arriving at that time so you can stage your bikes and get to registration at 7:00 a.m. The bike drop location is at the Horse Trailer parking lot inside the south gate at the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands. Heading east on Route 1 from Orland, the south gate entrance is on the left 2.4 miles past Hatchery Road. It is marked “Valley Road” on Google Maps, and the Horse Trailer parking lot is on the right approximately 1.3 miles in on Valley Road. Race staff will stay with your bikes until you pick them up later in the race. You may leave your bike helmet, bike shoes, food, and water with your bike provided that they are all attached to your bike. You may not leave anything at the bike transition area when you pick up your bike, so keep that in mind and do not leave more gear/food/water than you intend to carry for the rest of the race.
Mandatory Gear: Please review the gear list carefully and plan to carry all mandatory gear for the noted race segments. We reserve the right to check for mandatory gear items at any time during the race. We are providing paddle gear (double-bladed kayak paddles and PFDs) but you are welcome to use your own equipment if you prefer. You will not need to carry it for long periods. All personal paddle gear must be contained within a bag for your team. We are not responsible for lost gear that is not sufficiently bundled together.
Post-Race Celebration: As usual, we will hold a post-race party immediately following the race. We are excited to announce that local pizza and beer will be provided. Non-racers are welcome to attend - $15 donation to cover the cost of food is recommended.
Facebook: Please “like” our Facebook page to get updates before, during (for friends and family), and after the race!
Weather. The current forecast for Sunday is a high of 58 F with light winds and a 40% chance of showers. Bring clothing appropriate to the weather! And foliage is approaching peak, so bring your camera!
